Lt-Cdr. Sam Beattie, VC, RN
The precise manoeuvres required of Campbeltown as she approached the Normandie Dock, made it essential that she be under the command of an officer with extensive destroyer experience. Such was 'Sam' Beattie, who guided her into her target lock gate with pin-point accuracy - contact, which Beattie described dryly as 'a considerable jar' being made only four minutes late after a journey of some 400 miles.
Having seen his ship cleared of crew and casualties he and his officers evacuated onto ML 177 for the long run home. Sadly ML 177 was later hit and destroyed, leaving Beattie and other survivors to be picked up by the Germans in the morning.
